                                       Ship of State

An exciting and quite different aspect of USS Constitution's history is told in this limited edition print from Tom Freeman. In 1849, Pope Pius IX became the first Roman Catholic pontiff to step on to American territory when he made a visit to the ship as she stood in the harbor of Gaeta, Italy. Freeman, working with many sources to maintain the historical integrity of his work, has done a remarkable job of capturing the topographical and architectural landscape as well as the details of both the host ship and its illustrious visitor.
