COUNCIL HISTORY
CHARTER YEAR

Establishment: Battlefield Council No. 10246 was established by Charter from Supreme Council dated January 25, 1990. Sixty-one charter members formed our Council. The Charter Officers were officially installed on February 4, 1990 in ceremonies held at St. Patrick's Church. Council Officers for our Charter Year:

Our awards include:

KOVAR Participation (Knights of Columbus of Virginia Assisting the Retarded), for exceeding our goal; we have received this award every year since 1990.

·

Keep Christ in Christmas Award; we have also received this award every year.

·

Star Council Award (1991,1992, and 1996 through 1999).

·

Circle of Honor Award, 1996 through 1999, for being rated within the top four Councils in the State.

·

Knight of the Year: Dave Chichester, in 1999, from State, selected from over 100 candidates, for an outstanding history of service to the Knights of Columbus.

·

Church Activity Award--Renovation of the St. Pat’s Thrift Shop and Building of the Care Committee Building--in 1999, from State, selected from submittal from all other State Councils.

·

International Service Program Award for Church Service--Renovation of the St. Pat’s Thrift Shop and Building of the Care Committee Building--in 1999, from Supreme.

·

Certificate of Appreciation from the Virginia State Highway Department for participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program (every year since 1993).

·

Letters of Appreciation from local high schools for our After-Prom parties, and from the Arlington Diocese for contributions to Catholic Schools. International Service Program Award for Church Activities (1999).

·

Virginia Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. 100 Percent Achievement Award (1999)

·

Finalist in the State Newsletter Competition (1999).

Another achievement of note was our successful application in August 1999, for bulk mailing and non-profit organization status for our mailings—the monthly Bulletin, letters to Council members, etc. This designation has resulted in a savings of over $600.00 per year.

In May 1999, Battlefield Council launched its Web Page (http://www.kofc10246.org). It includes a history of our Council, information on the organization of the K of C and on how to become a Knight, the mass schedule of St. Patrick and St. Matthew Churches, and the monthly Grand Knight’s Message and Knight and Family of the Month.

Ladies Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary was inaugurated on May 18, 1994. The Ladies perform many charitable and church related activities, including:

Operation of the Religious Gifts Store.

·

The annual Holiday Bazaar.

·

Conducting bingo games at the local nursing home.

·

Assisting in the sale of fireworks.

·

Donations of blankets, toys, toiletries, etc. to foster children.

·

Support to the Council in many activities.

Money generated by the activities of the Ladies Auxiliary is donated to various worthy causes, including St. Patrick School, the Mary Washington College Ministry (now known as the University of Mary Washington Ministry), Catholic Relief Society, Birthright, and Little Sisters of the Poor.
